With a heavy heart, I recall that Shri O. S. Sehgal and Shri S. P. Gupta were pillars of PEC. Both officiated in the then administrative block, with its low-ceilinged rooms. On the roof of that very block, I along with my  batchmates of E&EC once learned gas cutting. There were trees whose branches kissed the roof, scattering large pumpkin-like fruits.

My close friend Satish Sanghi—now Steve Sanghi, who has built a business empire in the USA—once mischievously blew the flame of ethylene gas as if trying to  cut one of those fruits. The welding assistant, distressed by the act, complained to his senior colleague, amusing us all by referring to the fruits as “Balam Kheera (बालम खीरा).”

Beneath that modest roof sat Shri O. S. Sehgal and Shri S. P. Gupta, (Sh S P Gupta was from Jagadhri)  and, if memory serves me right, both were associated with Civil Engineering. Sh S P Gupta  was also adept at or I should say addicted to  playing cards over stakes.

Alas, Shri O. S. Sehgal has departed, and with him, a part of my nostalgia for my alma mater—especially that administrative block where, pressed for time, I once signed my progress card impersonating my father, who was 100 km away.

May the Almighty grant the departed soul a supreme place at His feet. Don’t you agree with me that such persons don’t die as they live by their great deeds? 

I will miss you, Sir, just as I miss that administrative block, now transformed into concrete symmetries in the garb of top-notch architectural art.
