An expert session on “The Use of Colour in Data Visualization” was organized by the Career Development and Guidance Cell (CDGC) with distinguished academicians and professionals from Royal Holloway, University of London including Steve Thomas (Head of Global Partnerships and Business Development), Liyana Bhaludin (International Partnerships Manager), and Dr. Matteo Fontana (Lecturer in Statistical Learning). Prior to the session, a detailed academic interaction was held between the visiting delegates and faculty members including Prof. J.D. Sharma (Head, CDGC), Prof. Divya Bansal (HOD, CSE), Dr. Poonam Saini (Associate Professor, CSE), Dr. Shilpa (Assistant Professor, CSE), Dr. Monika Verma (Associate Professor, CSRC), and Dr. Vivek Dabra (Assistant Professor, CSRC), to explore the feasibility of academic collaboration with Royal Holloway, University of London in areas such as student internships, joint research initiatives, and higher education opportunities.
The interaction was constructive and focused on strengthening institutional ties and creating avenues for global academic exposure. The session that followed provided valuable insights into the effective use of colour in data visualization, emphasizing the importance of appropriate colour selection for clarity, accuracy, and accessibility, including considerations for colour-blind users. The speakers also discussed best practices for designing intuitive visualizations, avoiding misleading representations, and applying colour principles in real-world analytics, dashboards, and reporting.
Dr. Matteo Fontana further highlighted the role of colour in statistical modelling and forecasting, demonstrating how visual encoding can significantly influence interpretation and decision-making. Overall, the session proved to be highly informative and impactful, enriching the learning experience of participants while also paving the way for potential international collaborations.
